Bruce was born in Evanston, IL. His family fmoved to Northbrook, Illinois, in June 1968. He graduated from Glenbrook North High School in 1975. He attended the University of Illinios, Champagne-Urbana, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Organizational Management.
He was an A-6E Bombadier-Navigator at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Washington when he met and married Jennifer. Bruce retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander.
