Notes for John Calvin Burgess Jr.
John was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Neshoba, MS when he entered the service. A letter to Era Person from the Grand Lodge of Mississippi, 27 Dec 1956, states in part “Brother Burgess was initiated, Passed and Raised in the year 1857 in Laurel Hill Lodge No. 195, located in Neshoba County. He served as Junior Warden in 1860. There were no returns for 1861 and he does not appear on roll after 1860.271

From Era Madden’s application for United Daughters of the Confederacy: John Calvin Burgess was a school teacher. He read letters to the soldiers and wrote letters home for them. He was called a scribe, according to the John Quitman Burgess family. Since two or three of his brothers-in- law had died wile serving in Confederate Army their bodies were brought home for burial. When the rider came announcing that John Calvin Burgess had died of measles, his widow who was living with her parents at the time, said let him be buried there (Saltillo, MS). Bill and Kay Person, my son and his wife, have been to grave site where there are many confederate soldiers buried, also, there are many tombstones without names on them. Axfter the second trip thet decided it was useless to try to locate the grave.***** I treasure a reference boofk used by John Calvin Burgess while he was teaching school. The name othe book”American Encyclopedia, History Biography and Travel, Comprising Ancient and Modern History: The Biography of Eminent Men of Europe and America and the Lives of Distinguished Travlers.” Illustrated with over 100 Engravings. Thomas H. Prescott, A. M., St. Louis, Missouri: Published and Sold Exclusively by Subscription, T.W. Carpenter & Bros, 1859. Jewell and Sallie bave this book to me as I was working on Family Genealogy. Granddaddy, J.Q. Burgess, had recorded dates of birth, marriage and death in the book. It served as a Bible for records etc.
