Notes for John Bailey
Came to America in 1635 on the "Angel Gabriel". He was a weaver and a yeoman. (From 2500 Immigrant ancestors)

John Bailey is first heard of being shipwrecked at Pemaquid, now Bristol, Maine, in the great storm of August 15, 1635. Owing to this terrible experience he never recrossed the ocean. He came from Chippenham, Wilts, England and was a weaver by trade. He settled first in Newbury, Massachusetts. Two years later, in 1637, he moved further into the forest and built a log cabin near the mouth of the Powow River. Here he lived a life of solitude and began to fish and cultivate the soil.

John Bailey left his wife, a son and two or more daughters behind in England. His son John Junior and his daughter Johanna came with him.

John was granted the sole right of fishing in the Powow River, provided, however, a certain proportion of his catch was given to the town, for fish was then an important article of food.

When the settlement of Colchester was started, later called Salisbury, John Bailey was granted lots in the first division of land.

In 1651 he was sentenced by the court to return to England by the next vessel or send for his wife to come over to him. The order was never carried out and he died shortly after. His will provided amounts for his family in England should they come over, and lesser amounts to them if they remained in England. The larger portion of his estate was left to the son and daughter who had accompanied him to America.88
