Died 1689
49Experience Mitchell of Leyden, Holland, arrived at Plymouth, Massachusetts, during July 1623, with the family of Francis Cooke, on the Pilgrim ship, Anne. He was 14 years of age. It is thought that his father's name was Thomas. widower of Maria. Experience was allotted eight acres of land in Plymouth and shared in the first division of livestock in 1627. He married at age 19 and lived first at Plymouth on Spring Hill. He sold his home in 1631 to Samuel Eddy and removed to Duxbury, where the land was more fertile. He lived at Bluefish River. In 1645 he was granted land at Satuckett, soon to become the town of Bridgewater. Later he received additional lands in Middleboro and Dartmouth, which he distributed among his children. A freeman in 1633, he served on the jury at the court of Assistants and before the general court. He was chosen "Surveyor of the heighways for Duxburrow". Sometime after 1680 he removed to Bridgewater with a wife, Mary and his son Edward. Jane, the mother of all his children, having died.
His will, dated 5 December 1688/9, was signed with his autograph when he was 80 years of age. It is generally conceded that Experience Mitchell, as a man of and a citizen, did much toward the upbuilding of the colony of New Plymouth.
