Basdil enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862. Upon his return he became postmaster at Oak Flat (northern Van Buren Co, Arkansas). He was a democrat, a Justice of the Peace, a lay preacher licensed to "exhort" by the Batesville District of the Methodist Church.76
