VALPARAISO VISITOR--March 24, 1921--Elvira Lucretia Carter was born September 16th, 1847, at Rock Island, Illinois, and was married Oct. 23, 1870, to Rodney K. Johnson, at Lincoln, Nebraska. To this union eight children were born of whom three are still living: Harry P. and Edgar P. Johnson and Ermile L. Stitt, all of Scottsbluff, Nebraska. She also raised one boy, Clyde L. Kingsley, now living at Council BLuffs, Iowa. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Cynthia Barbour, and one grandson, Teddy Umphris, who resides at Scottsbluff, Nebraska The Johnsons were the first homesteaders in Valparaiso and most all of the west side of Valparaiso is taken in by their homestead entry. They moved to Carson, Iowa, in 1906, where Mr. Johnson died soon after. In 1914, in order to be near her children, Mrs. Johnson moved to Scottsbluff where she resided until her death.
