Notes for John Galbraith Bastedo
John went to California via the Isthmus of Panama in April, 1850. He died at the age of 75.
I have a gold panning pan which belonged to a relative of my Grandfather Rodney Knox Johnson. His grandmother, Elizabeth, was a 1st cousin of John Galbraith. He gave it to my father who left it with me. The owner of the pan, "an uncle" used it in California about 1850. It is rusty but otherwise looks just like the ones you buy today. Unfortuately, I cannot prove the pan belonged to John Galbraith, but he is the only relative who went to California for the gold rush and I know it belonged to an ancestor of my Grandfather Johnson. The pan has been "mine" since 1945. We keep a small rock collection in the pan.
