Keith Preston, son of W. D. and Jesse (Roberts) Preston, was a well-known journalist, poet and satirist of Chicago. He graduated from the University of Chicago, received a master's degree from Indiana University and a doctoral degree in classics at the University of Chicago. Fluent in Latin and Greek, he taught at Indiana, Princeton and Northwestern Universities until 1923. For the next four years he was connected with Chicago newspapers as a columnist and book page editor. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, and the author of five books of verse, he was considered one of the best of the Chicago School of authors and poets by such friends as Christopher Morley and Carl Sandburg. Keith Preston died of a streptococcus infection of the ear at the age of 42.
