Notes for Robert Eyre
Robert Eyre, born in 1569 in Salisbury, England, christened on 2 January 1570 at St. Thomas Church, died in August of 1638, burial was in the St. Thomas Churchyard. Robert was a barrister-at-law, and a Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn. He married Ann Still, daughter of Right Reverend John Still, who was bishop of Bath and Walls. Ann Still was born in 1581 at Hadleigh, Suffolk. Old English records record similar data for a Lyonell Eyre, including the same name for his wife. A full name of Robert Lyonell Eyre is suggested.
Was Robert Eyre a Puritan? It is very possible. A Puritan minister named Hugh Peter was prominant in London during the 1620’s, and was later the Pastor of the Salem Church in Massachusetts. Among the papers of Pastor Hugh Peter is a 1627 letter in which he names four ministers, four lawyers and four citizens as men of trust. One of the lawyers is "Mr. Eyre of lyncolnes Inn". The name appears again in a "Great Leiger book" showing Mr Eyre gave five pounds to the organization headed by Hugh Peter.
