A Genealogical History of the Clark and Worth Familes - AYER
According to Thorpe's catalog of the legendary deeds of Battle Abbey, and W. E. Lincoln's genealogy of the Lincoln family, the traditional origin of this surname took place on the battlefield at Hastings in 1066 when Duke William was flung from his horse and his helmet driven into his face. One of his followers, Truelove, saw the accident, pulled off the helmet and re-horsed him. The Duke said to him, "Thou shalt hereafter from Truelove be called Eyre (Air) because thou hast given me the air I breathe." When William inquired about him later he found him severely wounded, his leg and thigh struck off. He ordered the finest care and later awarded him lands in Derby as well as "the leg and thigh in armour, cut off, for his crest, and this honorable badge is still worn by all the Eyres in England."
Mr. Lincoln as well as other authorities also cite another possible, and more prosaic, origin, simply "the heir". The addition of the final s produces "son of the heir". A common 13th century variation of the name was Le Heyer or Le Ayer. Other forms seen are Ayre, Aire, Eyer, Eire, and Hayers. Coat of Arms: Argent on a chevron sa 3/4 foils. Crest: Leg in Armour couped at thigh, and spur.
THOMAS EYER married Elizabeth Rogers of Poole, England. Their children, according to the Lincoln genealogy:
1. Robert, born in 1559 (doubtful because of date;
possibly a brother rather than a son).
2. Giles, founder of the Ireland branch, extinct.
3. Elizabeth, married G. Tooker.
4. Catherine, married T. Hooper.
5. Christopher, born in 1578.
6. Thomas, born in 1580.
7. William, born in 1585.
8. Rebecca, married J. Love.
9. Anne, married J. Swan.
10. JOHN1, born in 1592. See below.
JOHN AYER1 was born in England in 1592 and came to Salisbury, Mass., in 1637, perhaps from Norwich, co. Norfolk. He received land in Salisbury in the first division of land in 1640 and also in 1643. November 4, 1645, he was sworn a freeman, and in 1646 a tax list showed him to have taxable property of œ160, second highest on the list. About 1647 he moved to Haverhill, selling his house, land and commonage to John Stevens. In 1652, he received a share in the second division of plough-land. He could write and thus was a man of some education. He served on the grand jury in 1649 and 1652, and in 1654 due to his age was freed from all military training.
His wife Hannah is thought to have been the sister of John Everard alias Webb who left a legacy to the children of John and Hannah. John Sr. died in Haverhill, March 31, 1657, and his will of March 12 was prov. October 6 of that year. His widow Hannah died October 8, 1688, "aged", in Haverhill. They have many descendants. One-third of the inhabitants of Haverhill in 1700, it is said, carried the name of Ayer.

AYRES HISTORY.
JOHN AYER OF HAVERHILL, MASS. (1635).
In Volume 10, 1st series of Notes and Queries, is the following taken from "Rhodes Peak scenery" page 244. "The Eyres is one of the oldest families in Derbyshire where they have continued to reside more than seven hundred years. The seat of Humphrey Lee Heyr called Hope because he had hope in the greatest extremity.
From Burke's "General Armory of England." Eyre. (Bromham. Wedhampton, Chalfield, New House, etc., County Wilts, descended from Humphrey LeHeyer of Bromham, whose great grandson, Galfridus de Eyre of Bromham, was living tempo Edward II. The derivative branches were the Eyres of Botley Grange, County Hants, the Eyres of Eyre Court Castle, County Galway, of whom was Lord Eyre, and Eyres of Macroom, County Cork.)
The coat-of-arms of all the families in England vary but little and the original Derby family now represented at Rampton is the one from which John Ayer of Haverhill, Mass., descended.
From comparison of coats-of-arms and some tedious researches in the old country histories of England it is certain that a family of Eyre of Wiltshire, England, is a branch of the Rampton family.
Page 258
The old Wiltshire family of Eyre enjoyed for several centuries the highest distinction within its native country and was of consideration in the State, most of its chiefs having had seats in Parliament, and two of them learned in the law, upon the bench,--one a Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, a branch to which emigrated to Ireland, attained the peerage of that Kingdom.
THOMAS EYRE, ESQ., of New Sarum, lineally descended from Humphrey LeHeyer of Bromham, Wilts, held lands in Wimborn,
Page 1465
County of Dorset, in 21st year of the reign of Elizabeth. He married Elizabeth, daughter of John Rogers, Esq., of Poole, and had issue:

4. Thomas. Born 1580. Mayor of Sarum, 1610.
5. William. Born 1588. Barrister at Law.

His wife Hannah was born in England, died in Haverhill, Mass., Oct. 8, 1688. In the Archives of Boston, no date indexed 1639, we find "the names of those who have tolls and proportions granted for towne of Colchester, in first division" the name of John Eyers. "This is a true copie of the original list taken out of the old book of records for Salisbury as attests Vera Copia Atest. Thos. Bradbury sec. Edward Rawson Secretary." 552000. ELEAZER AYER. (Timothy6, Joseph5, Timothy4, Joseph3, John2, John1.) 548001. He was born in Franklin, Conn., March 29, 1776. Eleazer was twice married, his first and second wives being daughters of Abner and Abigail Ladd of Franklin. He first married in Oct., 1802, Anna Ladd, who died Oct. 11, 1829. Later he married her sister Rebecca. Eleazer Ayer, like the others born in the same old spot, lived there and brought up a large family. When the youngest daughter was 21 years of age, a reunion was held over all the children. They went over across the way and there weighed upon the old grist mill scales and the ten weighed just one ton. Eleazer was an active man and many transactions in real estate are recorded. We find leases and deeds as follows:
Page 1480
May 29, 1805, Timothy deeded to Eleazer, land.
Page 267

Sept. 18, 1844, Jason and Mary Roberts deeded to Eleazer Ayer.
Nov. 22, 1834, Samuel C. Ladd deeded to Eleazer Ayer.
In the house in which Eleazer Ayer was born, were also born 37 Ayers. Joseph 5th practically built the house as the previous one was only a small one. After Eleazer's death, this property passed out of the Ayer name, and only the cellar of the old house and part of the flume on the dam of the pond was left to tell where once was heard children's voices and the grinding of grain. A new house had been built near where the old one stood, by the new owner, but that, too, was going to decay, and the name of Ayer in Franklin is now (1902), only to be found in two families, both of whom are descendants of Timothy (6th). Residence, Franklin, Conn.
