Notes for Gabriel Friend
Gabriel Friend's birthdate (Copied from a Bible record) was June 17, 1761, making the traditional founding date of Friendsville (1760-1765) suspect. Source - "Indian Blood", Evelyn Guard Olsen, pg. 77. Additional Source - LDS Batch/File No. 5025909 U. S., Maryland (as of Mar 1992) lists birth date of 1762. page 4,696.

Gabriel Friend served as a 1st Lt. in the Washington County Militia in the Revolutionary War.

Gabriel Friend entered the Army in June, 1775, (at the age of 14 ?). He left the service in 1781 as a first lieutenant, ranger, and Indian spy. Fields of operation: Big Yohagany, Sandy Creek and Cheat River. Source - "Indian Blood", Evelyn Guard Olsen, pg. 59

Gabriel Friend married Elizabeth Bunnell in Allegany County, MD on July 28, 1787. Elizabeth was French. Source - "Indian Blood", Evelyn Guard Olsen, pg. 77.

Gabriel Friend was allotted two military lots as a settler in 1787. Source - "Indian Blood", Evelyn Guard Olsen, pg. 75.

In the 1800 census, Gabriel Friend was listed as the head of a household of seven, including his father, John. Source - "Indian Blood", Evelyn Guard Olsen, pg. 87.

Gabriel Friend, sixty-nine years old, was qualified as postmaster and was appointed on January 7, 1830. The Post Office closed in 1843. Source - "Indian Blood", Evelyn Guard Olsen, pg. 125.

Gabriel Friend is listed in the 1850 census of Allegany County, Md taken on August 2nd. Gabriel is listed on page 33A, line 30, dwelling no. 432, family no. 435. Gabriel's age is listed as 99 which, if true, would make his birth in 1751 not 1761. Gabriel's occupation is listed as "Hunter", his property value $25. He was listed as born in VA.

Gabriel Friend was a farmer, hunter, teacher and first postmaster at "Friends" later Friendsville, where he resided at "Friend's Fortune" (Friendsville) and on "Look Sharp," now part of the town.
