James Courier, a farmer, moved to Berlin about 1800. He and Anna Bailey were the parents of 11 children of which Sarah was the first. After the death of his first wife in 1840, James married Prudence Perrin in 1841. After her death in 1854, James married Elizabeth Dustin in 1855 and she was the mother of his 12th child, Mary E., who was born about 1856 when James was about 75. Elizabeth and her minor daughter, Mary E., are the only ones mentioned in James Currier's will dated 7 January 1869 when he was 88.

James Courier and his wives Anna Bailey and Prudence Perrin are buried in The East Road Cemetery, Berlin, Vermont.88
