Notes for John Ayer I
JOHN AYER1 was born in England in 1592 and came to Salisbury, Mass., in 1637, perhaps from Norwich, co. Norfolk.
He received land in Salisbury in the first division of land in 1640 and also in 1643. November 4, 1645, he was sworn a freeman, and in 1646 a tax list showed him to have taxable property of œ160, second highest on the list. About 1647 he moved to Haverhill, selling his house, land and commonage to John Stevens. In 1652, he received a share in the second division of plough-land. He could write and thus was a man of some education. He served on the grand jury in 1649 and 1652, and in 1654 due to his age was freed from all military training.

His wife Hannah is thought to have been the sister of John Everard alias Webb who left a legacy to the children of John and Hannah. John Sr. died in Haverhill, March 31, 1657, and his will of March 12 was prov. October 6 of that year. His widow Hannah died October 8, 1688, "aged", in Haverhill. They have many descendants. One-third of the inhabitants of Haverhill in 1700, it is said, carried the name of Ayer.

_________
John Eyre, born 2 September 1582 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. This John is probably the child baptized on 20 September 1582 in St. Thomas Parish of Salisbury, England and the one buried there in 1599. This John has often been identified as a Puritan who married Hannah Evered alias Webb, and immigrated to Massachusetts, where he died in 1657. No official documents have been found to support his immigration, and none were found which will prove inconclusively that it is incorrect. Although the baptism and the burial of a John Eyre is found in record books of St. Thomas Parish, the record does not identify the parents. The known family involvement with this church and the lack of any other Eyre family in the records provides strong circumstantial evidence that out John could not be this man. A second, and more likely possibility for the genealogy of the John, the Immigrant, begins on the next page.134
----------
John Ayer was born in England in 1587, he left Wiltshire, England, most likely in 1635 on the ship "James", and came to Massachusetts, he was in Salisbury in 1640, and may have arrived there in 1637. He was in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1648(49) where he was a Town Officer. John died 31 March 1657, at Haverhill, Massachusetts, where his will, dated 12 March 1657, was probated 6 October 1657.

John was married to Hannah , who died 8 October 1688. The record lists her as "aged". Often she is reported as being alive in 1691 when a deed was filed transferring her husbands lands in Salisbury, Massachusetts to their son Robert, and the above death recorded in Haverhill town records refers to some other Hannah Ayer. However the deed was signed on 3 February 1681 and was late filed.175
