FRIEND

In 1727, Israel Friend secured a Deed from the Indian Chiefs of the Five Nations for land beginning “at the mouth of Andietum Creek”199 and operated a mill on this property prior to 1736.200  [p. 117] Israel was in Virginia by 20 December 1735 when he was appointed attorney for Patrick Sims of Prince George County, Maryland to recover a debt owed by Daniel Burnett.201
On 3 October 1734, Friend received a land patent issued by the Colony for 300 acres located on the Potomac River two miles north of present-day Harper's Ferry and just east of present-day Bakerton, Jefferson County, West Virginia.202 (Tract 123, Map 3)  He and his wife had a house on this tract by 12 October 1736 which was situated 10 poles (165 feet) from the river. 203  Israel sold 100 acres of the patent land (the south end) to William Stroop (Strupe) for 25 pounds on 5 May 1746 with his wife Sarah relinquishing her right of dower. Israel's will, written 12 August 1749 and proved on 5 June 1753, listed eldest son Jonas, Jacob and Charles (youngest) and daughters Catherine and Mary Friend.  His wife Sarah was to receive one-third of the estate without any land. He named his brother Charles Friend, Capt. Thomas Swearingen as the executors, and the witnesses were Nathan Shepherd, Isaac Horsey Sr. and Ann Lennard. 205
His son Jonah (Jonas) and his wife Sarah sold 662 acres on 8 September 1754 206 after they had moved to Augusta County, Virginia on the South Branch of the Potomac River, as had Israel's son Jacob.  Israel's brother Charles owned land at the mouth of Conocoheague Creek north of present-day Williamsport, Maryland by 1736.207 Andrew, Charles, John and Nicolas Friend lived and owned land in Hampshire County, Virginia in the early 1760's.208
According to the Hopewell Friends History book excerpt concerning Israel, "shortly after he settled" on his 1734 patent land, he "commenced mining iron ore." Also, Robert Buckles referred to his 400-acre Fairfax grant land adjacent west of Israel as "adjoining the ore bank"209 and south across the Potomac River lay another iron deposit which was referred to as Ore Hill. There is no evidence of a furnace on either property, although the "Bloomery for making Barr Iron" was under construction by 1745 on William Vestal’s [p. 118] land which was only about six miles south on the Shenandoah River and the Keep Triest seven miles east along Israel Creek at the South Mountain on the Maryland side.  The Samuel Taylor ferry was probably the means of transporting the ore across the river.
Peter S. Craig states in a copyrighted manuscript that Israel Friend was born by 1693 and had two sisters:  Rebecca Friend who died in 1783 in Glouchester County, New Jersey and Mary Friend who married Robert Turner and came to western Maryland.  Their brother Charles’will was written in 1751, leaving sons Gabriel, Jacob and Charles.  Israel was appointed Ambassador to the Indians by the Governor of Maryland in 1725 and was given land at Antietam Creek by the Indians on 10 January 1727.
His father Andero (Andrew) Nilsson Friend was an Indian trader when he joined Charles Mounts Anderson (another Indian trader and son of Marrs Andersson of New Sweden) in a lawsuit in Cecil County, Maryland.  Andrew’s father was Nils Larsson Frande (Friend) who was in New Sweden on the Delaware River by 1648.210
The Chester County, Pennsylvania Tax Records list a Lawrence and Gabriel Friend taxed from 1726 to 1734 in Ridley Twonship.211
